Chicagoans Run for Erika's Lighthouse!
CHECK OUT THEIR PROGRESS!
On September 13th Chicago will host its 13th Annual Half-Marathon - 13+miles - and two friends of Erika's Lighthouse have pledged to make it all the way, with your support.

"This year, 13 is our lucky number!" exclaims Natalie Rheault, who with her long-time friend and running partner Dina Aizenstadt, will run to raise awareness and funds to help Erika's Lighthouse bring depression out of the dark.

On behalf of families and children everywhere, many thanks to The Lincolnwood School and PTA in Evanston who dedicated the proceeds of their recent walkathon to Erika's Lighthouse. Because of your kindness and generosity, we are able to reach many more schools and families with our Red Flags program and our new "Parent Handbook on Childhood and Adolescent Depression". Kudos to each and every one of you who walked. You are truly beacons of hope for everyone suffering from this illness.
Handbook Discussion at Winnetka Public Library
On Sunday, June 14 at 2:00 the Winnetka Public Library, 768 Oak Street, downtown Winnetka, will host a discussion with author Elaine Tinberg on our Parent Handbook on Childhood and Adolescent Depression. The event is free of charge and the public is cordially invited. In addition, the book is on display near the Library's reference desk. The library is a tremendous supporter of the handbook and has included an article about it in their upcoming newsletter. Don't miss what promises to be a lively and informative discussion.
Parent Handbook Launch a Success
It's 9:30.On the kind of Spring morning that makes it hard to stay inside. Yet the Book Stall in downtown Winnetka is packed. Standing room only, in fact. All eyes are on speaker Melissa Perrin, PSY.D. as she shares decades of accumulated insights with parents, educators and professionals who've gathered to face the 800-pound gorilla of depression, and launch the Erika's Lighthouse "Parent Handbook on Childhood and Adolescent Depression."

Depression. The word can stop people in their tracks. Admit it: We avert our eyes, feel queasy, get jumpy and want to run away when we hear it. Depression seems nebulous and scary, like a ghost, and many of us don't really know what the term means. But how do you fight something you can't even identify?
That's where Erika's Lighthouse comes in.

New spotlight on child suicides; Legislators and experts push for new interventions to avert tragedies

Once considered taboo, childhood suicide and depression are being talked about with increasing candor, a social movement that became especially relevant last month when three Illinois children -- a 10-year-old and two 11-year-olds -- took their own lives in succession.
The three suicides were unrelated, but prompted calls from experts and legislators to examine the toll not only on their families, but entire communities, as they push for new and earlier interventions to avoid tragedy.

Erika's Lighthouse Receives Grants for Handbook
It is one of the major missions of Erika's Lighthouse to get our newly-published Parent Handbook into the hands of every family who needs it absolutely free of charge.
| | In March, we received an anonymous $5,000 challenge grant to support our efforts printing and distributing the Handbook. Every donation will be matched dollar for dollar until the maximum is reached. |
| | We also received a generous grant from The Village of Wilmette Youth Services to roll out the Handbook. |
