Keeping Children Healthy and Safe
in the Information AgeA Presentation by Dr. Michael Rich
Director of the Center on Media and Child Health of Children's Hospital Boston, Harvard Medical School and Harvard School of Public Health, Wednesday, February 20th from 7:30 to 9:00 pm, North Shore Country Day School in the Conant Science Center Atrium, 310 Green Bay Road, Winnetka 60093.
Dr. Michael Rich, pediatrician and research scientist, is an internationally renowned expert on the influence of media on the health of children and adolescents. In today's Information Age, youth spend about 6½ hours per day with media -- more time than they spend in school, or in any activity other than sleeping. There is mounting scientific evidence that exposure to entertainment media can contribute to a child's risk of anxiety disorders, sleep disturbances, attention deficits, violent behavior, eating disorders, substance abuse, and obesity. However, there is also supporting evidence that media can teach children and expand their worlds. Dr. Rich will offer constructive solutions and approaches that children and families can use to protect themselves against negative effects while also using media in a thoughtful way to improve their lives. This evidence-based presentation is open to parents, educators, policy-makers and all who care about children and their well-being.
Co-sponsored by The Winnetka Alliance for Early Childhood and North Shore Country Day School. No payment or pre-registration is required. For additional event information please call the Winnetka Alliance office at 847-441-9001.
Dr. Rich's presentation at Lake Forest Country Day School - 7p.m. Thursday, February 21 - is also open to the public.
