SUPPORT FOR SCHOOLS

Schools play a key role in the early identification and intervention of students showing signs of depression. Our comprehensive approach has three parts: 1. training faculty to recognize the important role they play in identifying students who might need emotional support, 2. a curriculum for students about mental illness and social well being, 3. education for parents.

Think Tank on Adolescent Depression led by expert David Clark, PhD
On May 2, 2007 Erika's Lighthouse sponsored the first Think Tank on Adolescent Depression for middle schools that are using the Red Flags Program. Those in attendance represented pioneers in the field of educating young people on depression and making a difference in the lives of many children. These educators came together to share their experiences and expertise with the curriculum as well as additional mental health efforts in their school. Teaching the Red Flags Program puts a school on the cutting edge of the rapidly evolving arena of mental health education in schools. The input from the think tank is being used to help us move in our work of advocating for children in our highly competitive environment and to develop a national model on how to address mental health and youth in general.

We were honored to have David Clark, Ph.D as a discussion leader. Dr. Clark has an extensive background in cognitive therapy and medication issues. He is the Assistant Dean of Clinical Research and Professor of Psychiatry and Bioethics at the Medical College of Wisconsin. Before that, he was the Director for Suicide Research and Prevention at Rush for over twenty-one years. As a member of the Advisory Board of Erika's Lighthouse his professional contributions were instrumental in piloting our school based program.
