Mental Illness & Depression
Mental & Emotional Health Workshop: Emotional Crisis
FACT-Professionals estimate that 3-5% of children and 8-12% of adolescents experience clinical depression each year.
FACT-Children with untreated depression are at high risk for substance abuse and suicide.
FACT-Two-thirds of depressed children go undiagnosed and untreated. Yet treatment for depression has an 80% success rate.
In a perfect world, teens would talk freely about their illness. Unfortunately there is a stigma attached that keeps depression and other mental illness in the dark. Erika's Lighthouse Teen Board and Club Members from New Trier High School would like to break the stigma that surrounds depression and help students discover that mental health is for everyone. We all deserve to feel the best that we can. Personal stories will be read anonymously. These are real stories from students who grace the halls of New Trier everyday.
This Workshop will help students:
- Look at the nature and impact of stigma
- Eliminate stigma attached to mental health illness
- Recognize the warning signs of depression in self and others
- Learn how to help a friend, loved one, or family member
