The Cost of Spring Break: Alcohol, Risky Behavior, and Traffic Safety Concerns for Students

The Cost of Spring Break: Alcohol, Risky Behavior, and Traffic Safety Concerns for Students

Spring break is all about fun, freedom, and adventures for students, but it’s also a time when risky behavior spikes, especially when alcohol and driving mix. While it’s easy to get caught up in the excitement, it’s important to stay aware of the dangers that come with impaired and distracted driving during this vacation season.

Alcohol and Risky Behavior

Alcohol is often central to spring break parties, but when mixed with driving it can have devastating effects. Many students believe they can handle the wheel after just a few drinks, but even small amounts of alcohol can impair judgment and slow reaction times. According to NHTSA, 30% of young drivers 15 to 20 who were killed in crashes had Blood Alcohol Contents (BACs) of .01 g/dL or higher. Alcohol also impacts individuals differently based on several factors, including, BMI, food intake, speed of drinking, and the type of alcohol consumed. Driving on unfamiliar routes and long stretches of highway adds to the challenge, often leading to reckless driving and speeding.

Distracted Driving

It’s not just alcohol that creates risks. Distracted driving is one of the leading causes of accidents, especially among young drivers. Spring break road trips are prime opportunities for distractions. Conversations, loud music, or phones can easily take a driver’s attention off the road. Reaction times slow, situational awareness decreases, and the likelihood of missing crucial signals like stop signs or brake lights increase.

Staying Safe on the Road

To stay safe during spring break, plan ahead. Arrange for a designated driver or use ride-sharing services if alcohol is involved. Avoid driving when tired, limit distractions in the car, never use a phone when driving, and always wear a seat belt. The choices you make could save yourself, passengers, and others on the road. By making smart decisions, you can enjoy a fun and safe spring break without unnecessary risks.
